A Sanctuary Novel

Can cats and dogs ever get along, let alone fall in love?

Sam knows you can never go home again. As an orphaned feline shifter raised by wolves, being an outcast is nothing new to him. But the pack is still his family, and when one of them passes away, Sam returns to the New Mexico desert to say good-bye.

Gus is a loner who rarely returns to his pack, but as fate would have it, Sam is there when he chooses to visit. The history between Gus and Sam is tumultuous, to say the least, but when Gus gets an eyeful of the grown-up and gorgeous version of his childhood bully, he can’t control his reaction. And he isn’t alone.

The attraction is powerful, but so are their differences. And with trouble brewing in the pack and danger surrounding them, Sam and Gus might not have the opportunity to seek common ground.

This action-packed shifter novel is the ultimate opposites attract and enemies-to-lovers romance, and it includes a bonus novella, In the Dog House.

I would have liked for there to have been a bit more worldbuilding in this book to understand what the rules were. I don't know what made Sam and Gus mates... Were they fated? Did a bite during sex do it? Something else?

Just Like Cats and Dogs Sanctuary Book 1 edition by BA Tortuga Romance eBooks Reviews

Hmm. A large-breed cat raised in a pack of wolves. Sounds dubious but because of loving parents who take in almost any stray or orphan, it works here.
Sam is a cat shifter who has returned for one of his rare visits home, but only because of Pop, his adoptive father’s, death. When he meets up with Gus, his childhood bully, he finds that both of them have changed enough to at least be polite, and as time goes by, more than that.
You have to pay attention from page one, because this family is huge! 18 children is a lot to keep up with. In fact, I had to restart the book a couple of times and ultimately take a few notes before I became comfortable with all of the characters.
I love BA Tortuga’s style of writing, which some may call disjointed, but I call it more conversational or thoughtful, than smooth-flowing threads. The plot was good and, if not easy to follow, at least interesting enough to stick with it.
It’s not only the family history that keeps Sam and Gus moving forward in a cat and dog relationship. It’s putting aside the past childhood experiences and allowing themselves to start over. An enjoyable story. I’m looking forward to the second book in the Sanctuary series, What the Cat Dragged In.

First off let me say that I have read other books by this author and loved them. I alway jump at the chance to read one of her books. That being said, I will tell you about Just Like Cats and Dogs. I really liked the plot of this story centered around Cat and dog-shifters. There were a couple of wolf shifters that took in strays that didn’t fit in and tried to give them a loving home. Their idea was noble, but in this story, these outcast shifters are still never accepted. When they grew older, some of them went on to make their own way in the world. When Sam returns home because of the death of his adoptive father, he is still the outcast. Locked away in his room for safety during the full moon. However some things do change, Gus, the dog that tormented and bullied Sam in their youth now sees Sam as the beautiful, graceful, sexy cat that he has become. Feelings that are not supposed to happen are hitting him with full force. The chemistry between these two is evident from their first encounter, but Sam has to return to the City where he was a successful dancer and now a sort after choreographer. Even though Sam has strong feelings for Gus, he knows he will never fit in with the pack. Sam also has secrets that keep him a virtual prisoner in the safety of his own home when he is not working. My problem with this story was with the pacing. I found the writing to be choppy and the flow of the story to be disjointed. This book felt more like the second book of a series than the first book. There were many assumptions that I had to make as a reader. I found the character development lacking the most. Yes, I read where these characters came from and how they got to where they did, but the why’s and how’s were missing. I did like the ending of this story. Where these characters come together to make their own family. I do want to continue this series. As I said the overall plot was good. I enjoyed reading about these characters and their loving playful interaction as well as the fierce protectiveness that they have for each other.

I was given this book for an honest review by Wicked Reads.

Gus and Sam are a strange couple to say the least. Wolf and large Cat... I found this story very frustrating, because it felt so jumbled. I can normally follow fairly well, but I found myself having to continuously look back and figure out what was happening, where they were, who was doing what.

There were hints throughout this story but everything just felt incomplete.

There is a love story buried within the pages, but it is slightly obscure and jumps from past to present so quickly.

I didn't get that the two main characters really had that much chemistry. It seemed more of a friends to lovers idea, but it just didn't work for me all that well.

Both characters save each other and in the end, they are able to live peacefully, but I just felt that this was missing parts of the story that would have made it that much more clear.
I have a love/hate relationship with Shifter novels. There are several mainstream urban fantasy Shifter series that I enjoy. Among them, the Patricia Briggs Mercedes Thompson series Moon Called (Mercy Thompson, Book 1) and Eileen Wilks Tempting Danger (The World of the Lupi, Book 1). M/M Shifter stories often fail by comparison, usually because they're too trite.

That being said, I really enjoyed "Cats and Dogs." It doesn't approach the complexity of mainstream Shifter novels, but it was fun anyway. The relationship between the main characters was enjoyable, and I liked the way the author fit their human personalities to their Shifter identities.

I still hold out hope that one of these talented M/M authors will go more mainstream and write urban fantasy with gay characters.
Fun read and appealing characters. Here's hoping for more in this series.
It has been a bit hit and miss for me and this author however this book is awesome! I loved the theme and appreciated less detail on the bad parts throughout the book as a lot of the time, spelling something out isn't necessary. I loved the characters and the way it was written. I loved it that much that once I finished I bought the next one!
I would have liked for there to have been a bit more worldbuilding in this book to understand what the rules were. I don't know what made Sam and Gus mates... Were they fated? Did a bite during sex do it? Something else?
